Súria and Cardona, the Salt County



In the Middle Ages, salt was gold. The salt mines in Cardona had been exploited since the Roman times, but in the medieval times they became strategic for the local economy. The Count of Cardona controlled the business, and not far, his servant the Lord of Súria would help protecting the commercial roads.
Nowadays, both towns keep charming medieval old towns, and the Cardona Castle and the amazing Salt Mine are open to the public.

Ripoll Monastery



In Ripoll, craddle of Catalunya, towers an imposing Monastery where leading Counts where buried in the early middle ages. Although the inside of the church suffered lots of damages and had to be strongly restaured, its cloister keeps still deliciously carved capitals, and its Romanesque Gate is a unique masterpiece, a Bible in Stone, an Arch of Triumph of Christianity.

Montgrony Sanctuary



From this Sanctuary perched in the mountains you get amazing views of the Catalan Pyrenees.
The legend says the Count Arnau got damned for not paying what was dued to the workers who carved the steps taking to this place.
Another story relates the area to the Barons of Fame, legendary founders of Catalonia.

Sant Joan de les Abadesses Monastery



One of the most important monasteries of the Catalan Pyrinees. Abesses and Abbots wrote its history, that locals have related to the legendary, law-less and damned Count Arnau. It's quiet cloister, silent church and interesting museum will transport you back into the Middle Ages. And after that, it's worth taking a walk around the local Old Town.

Santes Creus Monastery


This Cistercian Monastery is considered the second best in Catalonia, and the one who followed best the rules of its order. The decoration of the capitals of the cloister is magnificent. Peter the Great, one of the most relevant kings of the Crown of Aragon and Catalonia, is buried here.
